I've been a lot of things in my life- a waitress, a college student, an art studio director, a social media manager, a retail associate, a real estate broker, a library volunteer, a technology sales guru (RIP Circuit City); but the hardest, most challenging and toughest job I've ever had... is being a Mom.
Being a Mother means nights without sleep, it means eating your cold food after everyone else begins eating, it means there's 4 pieces of cake and 5 people wanting a piece and suddenly "you didn't want any, enjoy!", it means getting stares at the grocery store because your child's nap was supposed to start 40 minutes ago, it means you haven't washed your hair in 4 days but your baby's dressed to the nines, it means less Girls Night Out and more family time, the day you become a Mom is the day your life forever changes. I was 25 years old when I heard my first baby cry, I shook my world and brought out tears I didn't know I could cry, joy I had never felt, love deeper than I knew possible.
"The moment a child is born, a mother is born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new." -Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh
Being a mother doesn't always mean you gave birth, either. So many strong, wonderful women take on the role of motherhood... from fur babies, to adoption, to fostering, to stepping up to the plate when someone's mothering skills are lackluster. It takes every bit of courage and commitment to be a Mom, and this Mother's Day, and every day, we celebrate you.
Being a mother is learning about strengths you didn't know you had, and dealing with fears you didn't know existed.
I think one of the most sound pieces of advice about motherhood I've heard is:
There's no way to be a perfect mother, but there's a million ways to a good one.
Happy Mother's Day, my dear!
